July 4, 2025 — As America commemorates the 249th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we pause to reflect on the enduring values that have defined our nation: liberty, unity, sacrifice, and service. On this historic day, Lettermen of the USA proudly joins the nation in celebrating not only our founding but also the countless individuals who have defended the freedoms first declared on July 4, 1776.

The Declaration of Independence was more than a mere proclamation—it was a solemn promise. A promise that this nation would stand for freedom and self-governance, regardless of the immense cost. Among the 56 signers who pledged their lives to this cause, nine tragically died during the Revolutionary War, either as a direct or indirect result of their commitment. The first to perish was John Morton, a Pennsylvania farmer who faced severe criticism for his bold stance in favor of independence. Additionally, several signers endured devastating financial losses, with five going bankrupt and losing their estates due to the war and British reprisals. These sacrifices—both of life and livelihood—underscore the profound price paid to secure the freedoms we cherish today. Over the past two and a half centuries, that promise has been upheld by generations of men and women who have served in our armed forces.

Lettermen of the USA, a nonprofit comprised of former college athletes, coaches, and veterans, embodies this enduring spirit. Just as the Founding Fathers united across the colonies for a shared vision, LOTUSA brings together leaders from the sports and military communities to give back to veterans in need, support Wounded Warriors, and foster mentorship and leadership through teamwork and unity.

As we look toward the 250th anniversary in 2026, we are reminded that preserving freedom remains an ongoing endeavor—and that every act of service matters. Whether on the playing field or in uniform, those who lead, inspire, and sacrifice carry forward the legacy of independence initiated by figures like John Morton and his fellow signers, whose financial ruin was a testament to their unwavering resolve.

This Independence Day, LOTUSA honors:
• The brave veterans and Gold Star families who embody resilience and courage.
• The athletes and coaches who recognize that teamwork and sacrifice are not just game-day values but lifelong commitments.
• The volunteers, donors, and partners who help us extend a hand to those who have borne the battle.
Let us recommit ourselves—as a nation and as individuals—to living lives worthy of the freedom we celebrate. Freedom was earned in 1776 through the courage of the signers, many of whom sacrificed their lives and fortunes, and has been honored every day by those who serve.
Happy Independence Day from all of us at Lettermen of the USA .
