Lettermen of the USA Honored by 114th Army Aviation Unit at
Pre-Deployment Luncheon

BIRMINGHAM, AL — October 2024 — The Lettermen of the USA proudly hosted a heartfelt luncheon to support and honor the 114th Army Aviation Unit as they prepared for deployment to the southern border of the United States. The event, held in Birmingham , brought together soldiers, veterans, and community supporters for an afternoon of camaraderie, appreciation, and shared purpose.

The luncheon, generously catered by Full Moon Bar-B-Que, provided a warm send-off for the men and women of the 114th, who will soon serve on a critical mission supporting operations along the U.S. southern border. With smoked meats, southern sides, and plenty of gratitude on the menu, the gathering reflected the close-knit bond between the military and the community that supports them.

Honoring Those Who Serve

The Lettermen of the USA, a nonprofit organization of former college athletes and coaches dedicated to helping veterans and their families, organized the luncheon as part of its continuing mission to serve those who serve our country.

“These brave men and women represent the best of us,” said Darryl Fuhrman, President of the Lettermen of the USA. “It’s our honor to stand beside them, just as they stand for all Americans. This event was about giving thanks and letting them know they’re not alone.”

Throughout the luncheon, soldiers shared fellowship with members of Lettermen of the USA,  who have made it their mission to assist veterans, wounded warriors, and first responders through acts of kindness, service, and community support.

A Gesture of Gratitude from the 114th

In a moving moment of appreciation, the 114th Army Aviation Unit turned the spotlight back on the Lettermen of the USA. Recognizing their steadfast dedication to veterans and military families, the unit presented President Darryl Fuhrman with a framed photograph of one of their helicopters — a powerful symbol of partnership, respect, and shared values.

The inscription expressed gratitude to the organization for its ongoing efforts to uplift those who have served and continue to serve.

“The 114th wanted to take a moment to thank the Lettermen for everything they do for veterans,” one soldier shared. “It means a lot to know there are people out there who care about us, who show up, and who keep serving in their own way.”

The framed helicopter photo now stands as a proud reminder of the enduring friendship between the 114th and the Lettermen of the USA — a bond built on service, sacrifice, and mutual respect.

Strengthening Bonds Through Service

The event exemplified the spirit of unity that defines both organizations. While the 114th prepares for their important mission, the Lettermen of the USA continues its commitment to helping those who wear the uniform — offering assistance, encouragement, and hope through their various community programs, including Autographs for Heroes, One Yard at a Time, and other outreach initiatives.

“We may come from different fields — the military and athletics — but our values are the same,” Fuhrman added. “Discipline, teamwork, and selfless service. That’s what today is about.”
