On May 8, 1945, the world celebrated Victory in Europe Day as Germany surrendered to the Allied forces, ending the Nazi war machine’s grip on Europe. From London to liberated cities in Western Europe, flags waved, and people rejoiced. German troops laid down their arms in Prague, Berlin, Copenhagen, Oslo, and beyond. While many German soldiers fled to avoid Soviet capture, millions were taken prisoner. The Soviets faced fierce resistance, losing thousands, but by May 9, the fighting ceased, and Stalin declared victory: “The war is over.”
