Shelters for Heroes: Restoring Hope for Families Like the Savages

Lettermen of the USA (LotUSA) has long stood as a beacon of support for veterans and their families. With the launch of its new Shelters for Heroes initiative, the organization aims to provide immediate, short-term housing solutions for veterans and their families who are facing homelessness or housing insecurity. One of the first families to benefit from this life-changing program is that of Sherika Savage, a 42-year-old mother and former Medical Technician at a local hospital.

Sherika’s story is a sobering reminder of how quickly life can take a turn. She took a leave of absence from her job to care for her young son, who was diagnosed with cancer and lost the ability to walk. Her devotion as a mother came at a steep cost: after over a year away, the hospital was forced to release her from her position. Compounding her family’s hardship, Sherika herself was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Once stable in Centerpoint, Alabama, the Savage family has found themselves without a permanent home. Their only refuge—a hotel room—is now made possible by the Shelters for Heroes program, which stepped in to bridge the gap while longer-term housing assistance is being processed.

While Sherika continues to advocate for her family—applying for housing through nonprofits and seeking aid from local and federal agencies—Lettermen of the USA is ensuring they aren’t left behind. Alongside temporary shelter, the organization and its network of partners are also providing food, clothing, and emotional support.

The Shelters for Heroes program is more than a roof overhead. It represents dignity, stability, and compassion in moments of crisis. For families like the Savages, it’s the first step back toward security and hope.

As the need for housing support among veterans and their families grows, LotUSA is calling on donors, volunteers, and community leaders to join them in expanding this vital program—because no hero should have to fight alone, especially not at home.
