The Letterman of the USA (LOTUSA) is dedicated to supporting Veterans across Alabama and the nation. Through our diverse programs and holistic approach, we aim to uplift Veterans—no matter their circumstances. Whether the need is economic, social, financial, or spiritual, LOTUSA is here to help.
At LOTUSA, one of our primary areas of focus is the mental well-being of Veterans. Too often, Veterans—particularly those suffering from PTSD or other mental health conditions resulting from their military service—fall through the cracks of the services provided by the Veterans Administration (VA) and other support organizations. LOTUSA is working diligently to address this gap, especially in the critical area of Veteran suicide prevention.
This is a difficult issue that affects all of us. According to the VA, 18 Veterans will die by suicide today alone. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Veterans under 45 years of age. Alarmingly, the suicide rate among female Veterans increased by 24.1% between 2021 and 2022.
According to VA.gov, September is Suicide Prevention Month, but every month is an opportunity to help prevent suicide. Even small gestures of support can make a significant difference to someone going through a tough time. You don’t need special training to show a Veteran you care—just a willingness to help them find the support they need before a crisis occurs.
That’s where LOTUSA steps in. If you know a Veteran facing challenges—whether financial struggles, family issues, PTSD, or any other difficulty—don’t wait. Reach out to them today. Let them know you’re there for them, or encourage them to seek professional help. You can always call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and press 1 for Veteran-specific support, available 24/7.
